An experiment exposed wastewater that contained 11 reactive dyes with different chromophores and reactive groups to varying levels of pH under both light and dark conditions to study decolorization mechanisms. Treatments included laser irradiation, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, and UV irradiation and hydrogen peroxide treatment under alkaline and acidic conditions. Decolorization of wastewater was fastest at pH 2 under light conditions. Optimal decolorization, however, generally occurred with UV irradiation and hydrogen peroxide treatment at pH 1. The decolorization of the reactive dyes did not depend significantly on the type of chromophore under this condition. The dyes that contained the formazan complex were less resistant to UV irradiation and hydrogen peroxide treatment than other groups, particularly the phthalocyanine group. 8 refs.
