Amann && Sohne, a leading German supplier of polyester sewing threads, is investigating the commercial feasibility of dyeing in supercritical carbon dioxide. A pilot plant constructed by Josef Jasper operates at temperatures of up to 130 degrees centigrade and at pressures of up to 300 bars. Practical tests of the plant have produced light shades of acceptable quality, but medium and dark shades exhibit rubbing fastness. The poor rubbing fastness causes soiling of the autoclave. The subsequent machine cleaning increases dyeing times for medium and dark shades to approximately 60 minutes per load.
