The Marks && Spencer method of evaluating and utilizing color measurement and communication is designed to increase commercial and economic productivity in the fashion industry. This is achieved by determining what color and fabric trends are being developed and designing to meet these trends. Since the application of specific colors onto particular substrates typically occurs in different countries with a wide variety of dyes, color range management becomes a crucial tool in achieving standardization. Computer color systems provide standardization by allowing input of digital specifications and control with tolerances. Marks && Spencer has developed an in-house system, Shademaster, which has the ability to display and modify colors onscreen. Another primary element of color management is the use of automated control systems in the production process to eliminate variations in the dyes, dyebath processes, and machinery.
