Researchers at the New Jersey Institute of Technology studied the feasibility of using ultraviolet radiation combined with hydrogen peroxide to remove color from a simulated effluent that contained azo dyes. Photochemical reactions initiated by the ultraviolet radiation created hydroxyl radicals that destroyed organic chemicals in the wastewater. Researchers judged the color removal effectiveness of the treatment by measuring the absorption spectra after treatment. The experimental results demonstrated that a combined ultraviolet radiation/hydrogen peroxide treatment efficiently removed color from the effluent. The reaction time depended on such factors as the chemical structure of the dye, the ultraviolet light intensity, the hydrogen peroxide dosage, and pH. The optimal conditions included a low pH combined with strong ultraviolet light intensity. 8 refs.
