Real Time Analysis and control of Batch Dyeing Processes.

Recent research has made progress in the real time monitoring, modeling, and control of batch dyeing processes. Researchers have refined the hardware and software components of a flow injection analysis (FIA) system and used the improved system to monitor the package dyeing of cotton with direct dyes and the disperse dyeing of acetate. The data acquisition software operates in a Unix system environment, which permits real time monitoring and control using a personal computer. A combined FIA/liquid chromatograph permits the monitoring of reactive dye exhaustion and hydrolysis. Researchers formulated two models for the reactive dyeing of cotton and evaluated the models as tools for controlling dye exhaustion. Initial efforts to determine the equilibrium conditions for dyeing nylon fabrics with acid dyes will be used to control dye exhaustion by varying the dyebath pH. 2 refs.
