The modification of wool with a reactive anionic modifier and then dyeing with a basic dye was studied. Analysis of the infrared spectrum shows that the wool fibre combines the modifier with a covalent bond, introducing an anionic group to the wool fibre, changing its electrical properties and its dyeing ability, enabling it to be dyed with a basic dye and resist acid dyes. The uptake of the basic dye, and the colour fastness improve with increases in the molecular weight, in the numbers of conjugate double bonds, and in the relative hydrophobicity of the modifier. The optimum technology for dyeing the modified wool with basic dyes is detemined. The strength, elongation and resilience of the modified wools were affected very little.
