A solution to the problem of disposing of the effluent that arises from wool scouring has been developed in the UK by Youghal Carpets and Stork Engineering. When the yarn is scoured, a water-oil effluent is created which also contains detergent and sodium bicarbonate. Using membrane filtration technology pioneered by Stork Engineering, a forced recirculation evaporator now improves the separation of the two components to concentrate the effluent. By using the oil retrieved in this way, both fuel bills and effluent disposal costs are reduced, say the companies.
