The aim of this report was to investigate the application of correlative colour matching to substrates differing significantly in dyeability or optical appearance. Experimental work relating to two types of cotton (unmercerized and mercerized) and nylon (standard and microfibre) circular knitted fabrics is described. For the cotton fabrics the databases consisted of nine direct dyes, and of 11 acid dyes for the nylon fabrics. 18 Pantone textile colour samples were selected on paper, and out of these six standard colours were selected for correlative colur matching. From the results it was clear that correlative colour matching can be successfully applied to textiles differing greatly with respect to properties, but increased attention has to be given to the colour or dyeability differences of textiles and the selection of correlative sample pairs.
