Wellman Incorporated, the largest recycler of postconsumer plastics in the United States, reclaims, cleans, processes, manufactures, and promotes its recycled polyester staple fiber. Wellman recycles clear and green soft drink bottles obtained from deposit return and curbside recycling programs. The more than 1 billion soft drink bottles recycled by Wellman in 1991 conserved 28 million gallons of fuel oil. The soft drink bottles contain a high grde of polyethylene terephthalate, which is the base mateial for Wellman's recycled polyester fibers. Applications for recycled polyester fiber include automobile interiors, carpets, and fiberfill for outerwear, sleeping bags, comforters, mattresses, and pillows. Recycled polyester fibers offer strong tensile strength for geotextile applications, such as railroad and road stabilization, roofing materials, tarpaulins, pond linings, and asphalt overlays.
