Application of the Low-Temperature Plasma in Preparation Processes of Linens.

Researchers developed a method for the preparation of gray linen fabrics with a low temperature glow discharge air plasma. Short (1-2 minute) treatments improved the hydrophilic properties of the fabrics. Furthermore, the plasma treatment facilitated subsequent size removal. Short term plasma treatment followed by washing removed as much as 90 percent of residual size. Unilike conventional methods, low temperature glow discharge plasma preserves the silver/gray color of the linen fibers. Plasma preserves the silver/gray color of the linen fibers. Plasma treatment did damage the lignin in the gray line, but the degradation was not sufficient to decrease the fabric's durability. 4 refs.
