After chlorination by sodium hypochlorite, researchers dyed polypropylene fabric with 12 azo disperse dyes in both alkaline and acidic media. Researchers observed a higher dye affinity to chlorinated polypropylene than to unmodified polypropylene. The extent of affinity depended largely on the nature of the substituents in the dyes and on the medium of application. Researchers used inductive effects, electrostatic interactions, and steric cause to study the influence of dye structure and substituent groups as substituents gave higher dye uptake and improved fastness properties when applied in an acidic medium. numerous refs.
