In 1994, several chemical manufacturers participated in Quicksilver, a program to streamline procedures for the rapid dyeing of 100 percent polyester, 100 percent cotton, and all polyester/cotton blend ratios. When analyzing current systems into component steps, participants uncovered several unnecessary steps that had heretofore constrained the design of optimal processing. Researchers identified eight chemicals necessary for a complete dyeing process for all fabrics: low foam scouring/detergent/penetrating aget, dyebath lubricant, sequestrant/peroxide stabilizer, peroxide scavenger, liquid alkali, leveling agent (for reactive dyes and direct dyes), nonsolvent based leveling agent (for use with disperse dyes on polyester), and after scouring agent. The Quicksilver process improves inventory control, lowers reworks, facilitates on-time deliveries, reduces chemical, energy, and water consumption, and increases throughput by 54 percent.
