The textile wet processing sector is a very improtant sector for the Indian economy as the largest foreign exchange earning sector. Much of the wet processing is done in the small/decentralized sector, which is also characterized by a major pollution problem. However, these units can not afford waste treatment. Further, tightening environmental legislations may act as a trade barrier and may adversely affect the exports, especially to European countries. This paper, presented in a one-day conference held at the SASMIRA in February 1995, explores some practical waste minimisation options for a small scale textile process house.
