Continual increases in the costs of chemicals, energy, and water make their recovery critically important. The textile industry uses hyperfiltration and ultrafiltration, first introduced 20 years ago, for recovery, although the use is not yet widespread. Mills that have installed filtration systems have had a return on investment of between one and two years. A major factor to ensure the success of a recovery system is good automatic control, which significantly improves the cost effectiveness of the textile process, as well as minimizing the cost of the recovery system. An illustration of the use of these systems describes the recovery of polyvinyl alcohol, indigo, caustics, and preparatory chemicals.
