Researchers investigated the treatment of nylon 6 with ethylene glycol to determine the effect of the treatment on dye uptake by the fiber. Variations in ethylene glycol concentrations included 1 percent, 2 percent, 3 percent, and 4 percent. Treatment of the nylon 6 samples with the various ethylene glycol concentrations included temperatures of 20, 50, 80, and 100 degrees centigrade. Exposure of treated and untreated samples to Sandalon Yellow E2GL used standard dyeing procedures. Results indicated that pretreatment with ethylene glycol produced significant fiber shrinkage. Untreated samples achieved the greatest dye uptake at 100 degrees centigrade. In contrast, fibers treated with a 3 percent ethylene glycol solution achieved the same level of dye uptake at room temperature. At increased temperatures, dye uptake increased for pretreated fibers. 6 refs.
