Researchers in Hungary attempted to elucidate the role of stable free radicals in the photodegradation of reactively dyed cellulosic fabrics. Experiments exposed cotton to light from a high pressure mercury vapor lamp and evaluated photofading based on determinations of color differences, measurements of changes in optical density, and the detection of stable free radicals. An ESR spectrophotometer located concentrations of free radicals. Under the experimental conditions, phthalocyanine and anthraquinone dyes did not generate stable free radicals. Azo dyes always generated stable free radicals. Exposure to light increased the quantity of free radicals. In cotton fabrics colored with azo dyes and finished with azodimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea, the light induced generation of stable free radicals increased the rate of photofading. 6 refs.
