Celsol-biotransformation of cellulose

The enzyme-aided production of cellulosic fibres has been fascinating the Finnish and Polish research groups since late 1980's. It has been proved the chemical substitution of cellulose is not a necesity prior to the production of alkaline spinning solution. Treatment of dissolving pulp with cellulase mixture renders the pulp directly alkali soluble. Cellulosic fibres are obtained using the same spinning method and parameters as known from the viscose process. This paper presents some background and results of cellulose activation with enzymes.
