For direct discharge a full-stage mechanical/biochemical purification plan is normally required, operating in several interconnected stages for optimum performance. The heart of such a treatment plant is the biological phase, usually aerobically operated. Other methods of dealing with effluent are described, including anaerobic-biological purification, broad irrigation, chemical purification and combined processes.
