Textile waste waters are very complex in their chemical composition Due to the small batch production used today there is no steady state in the chemical composition. When the legal control of these waste waters are carried out by the authorities, both chemical and biological properties are taken into consideration. This paper descibes the work on combined chemical and biological assessment methods in order to characterise certain toxic, bioaccumulative or biodegradable fractions of compounds in order to substitute hazardous and environmentally hostile chemicals to the dyehouse. As a result an analytical tool was devised which can be described as scheme consisting of a chemical, GCMS and HPLC and a biological, so called OECD-methods.
