This chapter of the book presents an overview of the research conducted in four treatment areas and provides a discussion of results obtained from the pertinent studies. The four areas include: chemical pretreatment; aerobic biological treatment; anaerobic biological treatment; and anaerobic-aerobic biological treatment in tandem. Conclusions and observations that are consistent between related studies are outlined, as well as those that are inconsistent with earlier work.
