This paper reviews the application of physico-chemical modifications to fibres which affect the surface of polymer substrates without changing the nature of the bulk of the substrate. The uses of corona discharge, plasma treatment, glow discharge undo atmospheric pressure, sputter etching, ultraviolet light irradiation, ultraviolet laser abrasion and high-energy beam irradiation are all considered.
