A report is presented on the Indian jute industry and its problems complying with the statutory requirements of the Pollution Control Board. A comparison is made between the processing steps of jute and cotton and the effects of both on the environment. There are also studies on the types of pollution caused and the characteristics of chemicals used in the dyeing process. Suggestions are made for ensuring the process is more environment conscious - for instance using products from members of the Ecological and Toxicological Association of the Dyestuff Manufacturing Industry (ETAD) for low toxicity, IJIRA has carried out research into effluents and believes the environment can be sustained if industry works along side government, academic institutions and consumer organisations.
