An experiment concerning the partial carboxymethylation of bleached flax cellulose carried out a carboxymethylation reaction by treating the flax fibers with sodium hydroxide followed by sodium salt of monochloroacetic acid. Researchers evaluated the following four variables: concentration of monochloroacetic acid, concentration of sodium hydroxide, reaction duration, and reaction temperature. Data indicated that the extent of carboxymethylation increased substantially by controlling the concentrations of alkali and monochloroacetic acid and by reaction for 1 hour at 70 degrees centigrade. Researchers also evaluated the behavior of slected samples of partially carboxymethylated flax toward basic dyes. 7 refs.
