Researchers used pigment padding techniques to investigate the effect of different developing bath concentrations (caustic soda and sodium hydrosulfite) on mercerized and unmercerized cotton fabrics during vat dyeing in the presence and absence of wetting agents. Results indicated that dye uptake values were highest at higher concentrations of caustic soda and sodium hydrosulfite. Fabrics pretreated with TRO oil exhibited greater dye uptake than untreated cotton fabrics. The dye uptake and brightness of mercerized cotton fabrics were greater than unmercerized cotton fabrics. 2 refs.
