Solubilizing or ionic dyes used on narrow fabrics include permanent acid dyes and temporary reduced vat dyes. Customers select narrow fabric dyes based on color, color uniformity, colorfastness, cost, overall appearance, and aesthetics. Batch dyes require ionic interactions and use large volumes of dyebath, whereas continuous dyes require drying the dye onto the fiber surface using a limited volume of dyebath. Diffusion of the dye into the fabric depends on molecular size (mobility), substantivity, temperature, time, surface concentration, and presence of other chemicals. Use of hypochlorous acid and caustic soda offers benefits for mercerization, including a 25 percent improvement in dyeing color value, as well as improved fabric luster, performance of fabrics treated with heatsetting resins, dimensional stability and shrinkage control, and fabric strength.
