Development of the high efficiency tentering machine and other versions of drying chambers occurred due to the increasing costs of energy in the 1970s. Major design improvements implemented in the 1970s. Major design improvements implemented in the one to one counter type tentering machine include symmetrical arrangements of nozzle sets, a staggered blower arrangement, large doors and panels, and modular design of the drying sections. The two and two counter type tentering machine, designed for direct fire heating, offers two blower fans in each drying compartment, symmetrical drying and heat setting zones, efficient large circular filters, and low height. The performance appraisal of a tentering machine should occur under systematically standardized conditions. Waste heat recovery is possible, although current technology does not provide recovery at a competitive price.
