Researchers investigated three methods to improve the photostability of jute fabrics: modification of the bleaching and dyeing processes, applying select treatments after bleaching or dyeing, and using particular dyes. After dyeing and processing, samples of plain weave jute fabric were evaluated for whiteness, yellowness, redness, K/S value, lightfastness, and washfastness. Data indicated that dyed or bleached jute fabrics treated with copper sulfacte potassium dichromate exhibited greater photostability than untreated bleach fabrics, dyes with a maximum absorption measuring 590-670 nanometers reduced the lighfastness of dyed jute fabrics, aftertreatments with dye fixing agents significantly improved K/S values, and aftertreatments with copper sulfate-potassium dichromate and dye fixing agents improved washfastness. 9 refs.
