The objectives of this research were to minimize the use of urea in printing pastes containing reactive dyes for viscose fibers by its total or partial substitution. Experimental variables included the quantity of urea in the printing paste, drying temperature prior to steaming, and the type of colorant (chemical composition, reactivity, and sensitivity to moisture). Experimental constants included drying and steaming times, printing paste viscosity, and fabric type. The research demonstrated the importance of urea in printing, however, the type of colorant was also significant. The type of colorant affected the printing performance and determined the requisite concentration of urea. Colorants that were less sensitive to moisture required less urea. Control of the drying temperature prior to steaming permitted a reduction in the quantity of urea used. 3 refs.
