Wastewater problems associated with the vat dyeing of textiles include low biodegradability of commonly used dispersing agents, high chemical oxygen demand due to auxiliaries, heavy metal content, and sulfite/sulfate content. Reduction of these problems relies on the use of easily biodegradable dispersing agents and other auxiliaries. Hydrogen sulfite in combination with an organic reducing agent at a 2:1 ratio effectively reduces heavy metal content and other pollution parameters. Optimization of the vat dyeing process aids in pollution reduction. Optimization methods include the use of jet or overflow machines for dyeing light shades and isotherm dyeing. 1 ref.
