Researchers investigated water hardness of samples obtained from aquifers in the Rajasthan region. The study evaluated 60 samples collected from wells throughout the city of Jodhpur. Chemical parameters evaluated included cations, anions, pH, total dissovled solids, conductivity, and total hardness. Results indicated that 90 percent of the samples contained hardness above the recommended textile processing maximum concentration of 150 parts per million. Additives used to soften the water included guar gum. Compounds synthesized from guar gum reduced water hardness by 200-400 parts per million, depending on the residency time of the water in the ion exchange column, which ranged up to 2 hour intervals. 7 refs.
