Researchers investigated the reaction of various dyes with water treatment techniques for color removal. Treatments used included coagulation/flocculation, membrane filtration activated carbon filtration, and ozonation. Sulfur and disperse dyes coagulated well, but acid, direct, vat, mordant, and reactive dyes performed poorly. Cationic dyes did not coagulate at all. Microfiltration removal for all classes of dye but the filter clogged frequently. Powdered activated charcoal tests demonstrated positive results for cationic, mordant, and acid dyes. Ozone levels of 50 milligrams per liter provided very efficient color removal for acid, mordant, cationic, direct, reactive, and sulfur dyes. Results indicated that the ozonation technology provided the best results for color removal and chemical oxygen demand.
