Closed channel wastewater flows are full pipe flows where the liquid is being pumped and under pressure. Closed channel wastewater applications can be found in pretreatment facilities where the liquid is being pumped through a treatment process before final discharge. Open channel flows, the most common wastewater discharging technique, are open air free surface discharges where the liquid is under pressure and flows by gravity through a measuring channel and into the collection system. When selecting a flow meter, manufacturers should consider the anticipated flow rate, diameter and material of the pipe, suspended solids content of the liquid, chemical content of the liquid, temperature, and pressure. The five types of flow meters are magnetic, propeller, transit time, ultrasonic doppler, and differential pressure.
