Examples are described of how to reduce the pollutant load in effluent and how some harmful substances can be removed from the water. The examples come from research projects at the DTFZNW Germany. They include the use of cyclodextrins in place of surfactants, the formation of dye complexes of low solubility with the ligand cucurbituril, reducing the concentration of heavy metals, and the use of super-critical carbon dioxide in place of water in certain dyeing procedures.
