The fundamental principles of a new dyeing process are described in which the water of conventional dye liquors is replaced completely by supercritical carbon dioxide. Some physico-chemical interrelationships in supercritical fluid systems which play a role in this process are explained. A suitable apparatus for dyeing with supercritical fluids is presented. Dyeing of polyester with disperse dyes is used as a example.
