Fate of water soluble azo dyes in the activated sludge process

Results of pilot-scale experiments to determine the fate of the eleven dyes which passed through the treatment process, four were significantly adsorbed on surplus activated sludge and three were biodegraded. A further eleven dyes were also studied, but no concldusions could be drawn because of poor recovery from various matrices analysed. The health hazards (carcinogenicity) posed by some azo dyes are mentioned.
