The structure, physical properties and dyeing behavio9ur of silk fibres chemically modified with ethoxyethylmethacrylate (ETMA) are discussed in relation to the add-on. Maximum add-on is attained after 60min at 80℃. the modification does not affect the tensile properties of the silk fibres. Infrared spectra show that there is evidence for ETMA polymerization having occurred inside the fibre. The rate and extent of acid dye uptake are greatly increased by ETMA polymerization, as are the transfer printing properties when silk fabrics are printed with disperse dyes.
