Establishing benchmark figures for energy and water savings in dyeing and finishing treatments and processes is complex. Companies should continue to examine how much energy they are using, where is it used, when is it used, why is it used, and how much should be used. Such examinations can frequently yield significant energy and monetary savings. Study of the energy usage of a jet dyeing machine for scouring and dyeing polyester showed that half the energy ended up in the cooling water. Opportunities for energy savings in jet dyeing include recovery of cooling water, reducing the need for reprocessing, and cutting the load to liquor ratio. Additional energy savings can be achieved by adding hoods to jigs and winches. Heat recovery of effluent can pay for itself in as little as two years. Fitted covers can prevent nip evaporative losses that can exceed 40 percent of the total energy input.
