The textile industry's increasing awareness of environmental pollution has led to new textile chemical processing treatments. Excess sizing ends up in the effluent stream and contributes to the biochemical oxygen demand. To counteract this, the textile industry is switching to effluent-free sizing processes. Using captive water for desizing not only prevents pollutants from entering the water stream, it also saves money. Desizing with captive water offers improved desizing, energy savings, optional enzyme use, and the recovery of valuable chemicals. Modern trends in scouring include captive and standing baths. In the case of alkaline scouring, the latest developments include the open width processing system and the jumbo jigger. 4 refs.
