The adaptation of a purification plant inoculum can degrade polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) within three days using the Zahn-Wellens test and within 28 days using the Sapromat test. Elimination is greater than 90 percent. An increasing degree of substitution of ester groups progressively impendes PVA degradation. Although PVA degradation is exponentially retarded with decreasing temperature, degradation does not stop even at 8 degrees centigrade. Quantitative analysis of the carbon dioxide reveals that the PVA is biologically degraded. 11 refs.
