Treatability of Water Soluble Azo Dyes by the Activated Sludge process.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Toxic Substances evaluates submissions to the Premanufacture Notification process under Section 5 of the toxic Substances Control Act. Azo dyes represent a significant percentage of these submissions because of the demonstrated or suspected carcinogenicity of some of these dyes, their precursors, and degradation products, such as aromatic amines. The Water Engineering Research Laboratory is conducting an ongoing study of water soluble azo dyes in activated sludge. The study does pilot facilities with a range of dyes and monitors the dye through the system. Mass balance calculations assessed the fate of the parent dye, particularly whether no removal or removal by adsorption or biodegradation occurred. Book. numerous refs.
