The combination of a rotor damping system and an area weight differential measuring and control unit permits contact-free, low add-on printing in festoon steamers. The area weight differential measuring unit measures moisture add-on and, by traversing the fabric, can monitor the spraying function of individual rotors. The quantity of water or chemicals can be quickly changed. Irregularities in application are identified and isolated. The use of this system in both single- and two-stage processes with either reactive or vat dyes is reviewed. In the single-stage process, the quantity of polluting chemicals, such as urea and glycerine, is significantly decreased. Optimum color yield is achieved by the reduced heat in the steamer and by the increased equilibrium moisture. In the two-stage process, a special steamer is not required for short fixation times. 9 refs.
