In India, the scarcity of large quantities of relatively pure water is a major problem for the textile industry. Bleaching and mercerizing use the greatest amount of water. An optimized sequence for wet processing that significantly decreases water consumption is presented. Washing, desizing, and mercerizing are particularly examined for water reduction. By replacing chlorine bleach with hydrogen peroxide, one wash can be eliminated. The reuse of aqueous solutions of chemicals can contribute significantly to water reduction. Modification of machinery, such as the use of the counter-current method in washing, decreases water consumption by up to 50 percent. New technologies, such as solvent scouring, and combining several finishing steps in one can lower water use. 6 refs.
