APPLICATION OF CHROME MORDANT DYES ON SILK

The feasibility of applying chrome mordant dyes on silk was evaluated, and the effect of different mordants on the color of dyed examples was evaluated. Seven chrome mordant dyes from Sandoz and 13 organic salts were used to dye plain woven mulberry silk fabric. The samples were dyed in a laboratory jigger dyeing machine. Reflectance data were recorded on an ACS Spectro-sensor. Lightfastness was detemined using an MBTF lightfastness tester. Washfastness was determined according to ISO II test standards in the Launderometer. Depending on the mordant used, a range of colors was produced. Mordanting deepened the color. Nickel sulfate, cobalt sulfate, chromium acetate, and copper sulfate mordants improved washfastness as well as lightfastness of the samples. 6 refs.
