The photofading of monochlorotriazinyl (MCT) reactive dyes on cellulose was examined under wet conditions in the absence or presence of oxygen. The dyes showed no fading in deaerated water, oxidative fading in aerated water, and reductive fading in the presence of DL-mandelate in nitrogen. C.I. Reactive Blue 2 and a phthalocyanine dye showed a multi-stage photoreduction. Their reduction intermediates were oxidized to reform the original dyes. The azo group nearer to the triazine ring of a copper-complex disazo dye was readily photoreducible. The azo group farther from the ring was photooxidizable. The relationship between the rates of fading in aerated water, the degree of association, and the concentration of dye on cellulose was examined for a phthalocyanine dye. The fading behavior of C.I. Reactive Blue 19 was compared with that of C.I. Reactive Blue 2 under varying conditions. 14 refs.
