Light-colored cotton fabric samples were dyed with Indanthrene stable dyestuffs and washed at 95 degrees Centigrade with a perborated detergent, with and without optical brightener. The greatest color change occurred in the fabric samples that were washed in a detergent with an optical brightener, but were not pre-bleached in the mill. The change occurred during the washing process. Less color change was noted in the fabric samples that were washed in a detergent without an optical brightener, and were not pre-bleached in a mill. Color change was caused by chemical bleaching, which caused an oxidizing effect on the perborate in the detergent.
