Restrictions on the discharge of organohalogens into wastewater are reviewed. Although the AOX (adsorbable organic halogen) parameter does not discriminate between hazardous and non-hazardoud substances, it does permit rapid, accurage identification and quantification of organic chlorides, bromides, and iodides. The application of the AOX parameter to wastewater produced by the processing of pulp/paper, cotton, and wool is described. 56 refs.
