The hot exhaust reactive dyeing process for cellulosic fabrics is discussed. Characteristics of the padding and exhaust methods and advantages of cold/warm and hot-dyeing techniques are reviewed. The properties of reactive dyes most important for hot dyeing are a high degree of exhaustion and fixation, good leveling properties, good solubility, a low sensitivity to variations in process conditions, and excellent washing-out properties. Basilen E reactive dyes for hot exhaust dyeing were recently developed by BASF. Short-liquor dyeing techniques and the one-bath dyeing process for dyeing polyester/cellulosic blends are explained. BASF is developing a computer program for selecting dyes and dye recipes that allows for variations in dyeing process conditions.
