Singeing, the burning of protruding fiber ends to improve the wear and appearance of a fabric, is essential to the production of quality fabrics. Singeing faults include uneven effects, stripes, thermal damage, formation of carbonized fiber beads, and reduction of tear strength. Singeing problems are compounded by the fact that nearly all fabrics are singed in the gray or un-desized state, which means that the fiber ends do not present themselves. The precise thermal conditions necessary for proper singeing and the demands placed on the modern singeing burner are discussed. Flame quality and burner positioning are considered. Safety concerns are noted.
