Problems associated with finishing and dyeing fabric woven from polyester microfibers are reviewed. After weaving, desizing is performed on an open-width machine to prevent irreversible creasing. The high surface area presented by the microfibers is responsible for many of the dyeing properties. The dyeing rate is faster, which causes problems with levelling. Because the dye pick-up is increased, significantly more dye is required. It is generally not possible to calculate dye quantity accurately because of variations in the manufacture of microfibers. To ensure level dyeings, the highest final dyeing temperature and a long dyeing time are critical. The lightfastness of microfibers can be imparied by their higher absorption of light and conversion of light into heat. Because of the increased surface area and higher dye requirement, the wetfastness of dark shades is poor. 4 refs.
