The historic development of color measurement methods is reviewed. The objectives and advantages of online color control are noted. A basic online color control system is described. Topics discussed include problems associated with the design of an online remote color measuring spectrophotometer; the design of a new online remote color measuring spectrophotometer based on two instrumental concepts; research and development in online color control by major color measuring equipment manufacturers; first generation versus second generation remote sensing spectrophtometers; color data processing, process visibility, tolerancing, and varlation signaling; online color control systems in the United States and India; and a case study of Lyman Dyeing && Finsihing Company. 18 refs.
